Published

Becoming a health care provider is a long and exhausting path for a good reason. Your license gives you the power and the responsibility to take care of other people’s health, which is the most noble and most important career choice one can make. Besides, it is a profession which will ensure you a well-paid job, which is not a small thing in today’s economy.

A career in medicine is something many people aspire to. Doctors have always been respected members of society who had a satisfactory salary and good reputation. There is a good reason behind all that – it is not easy to become a doctor. The career path is very lengthy and difficult. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the years you invest in it can end up paying off in the form of a secure employment and a solid salary. Knowing all this, you must be wondering if there are any shortcuts to becoming a doctor. The truth is, there are, but they will require you to think ahead or invest more effort and study hard.

A road to becoming a physician around the globe

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a typical educational road to becoming a physician usually takes between 11 and 16 years. In Australia, on the other hand, you will need to complete 12 years of an undergraduate education, plus four to six years for a typical Doctor of Medicine or Bachelor of Medicine, and a postgraduate study (medical specialty), which takes additional three to five years. In the UK, the situation is quite similar. You will need five years to get a medical degree, two years to complete a foundation program, three years to complete a general practitioner training and, if you decide to continue, five to eight years for other specialty trainings.

The countries where it is believed to be the easiest (according to various factors, ranging from the price of education to its duration) to become a doctor are Sweden, Poland, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Russia, Belize, Ireland, India and Romania.

Becoming a doctor in six steps

If you start planning your career in time, you will need only six big steps to get to your final goal.

Step one: Choose the right subjects in high school (mathematics, chemistry, physics, English, biology, and organic chemistry).

Step two: Improve your chances by getting some work experience by volunteering at the hospital or working in a research laboratory.

Step three: Take the entry test. There are two types of entry tests: the one that tests your scientific reasoning, social science reasoning and essay writing (GAMSAT in Australia, BMAT in the United Kingdom) and the other that tests your non-verbal reasoning and social skills (UMAT, UKCAT, etc.). It can be helpful to find GAMSAT tutor to start intensive preparation for all the tests as early as you can.

Step four: Go to medical school (four to eight years) and be proactive and hardworking during that time.

Step five: Start your internship (three to seven years), which basically makes you a doctor, just a junior one.

Step six: Be a doctor.

Shortcuts you can take

This is what you’ve been waiting for since the beginning of this article. There are some shortcuts you can take, and here’s a list:

  • Finish high school earlier – for highly successful high school students, many states offer an option to graduate after the 10th grade. To accomplish that, you will need to meet your state’s requirements and provide a proof of academic excellence.
  • Opt for “fast-tracking” medical school, which makes four years of education into three years of intensive learning.
  • Choose a specialty which requires shorter residency. For example, general internal medicine, pediatric medicine, emergency medicine and family medicine usually require three years of residency.
  • Enter a fellowship program. You will take your licensing examination when you complete your internship, and as soon as you get your license, you can become a practicing physician. The areas for which you can get fellowship depend on your choice of residency.

Your license gives you the power and the responsibility to take care of other people’s health, which is the most noble and most important career choice one can make.
