Be The Change

Today is day 3 of the Celebrate Civility challenge. Today's tip is to be the change.

Be a role model for good behavior. Spreading kindness is simple. Say hello, make eye contact, or smile when a colleague passes by – and if you see a fellow nurse struggling, offer assistance.

“Don’t stand by. Stand up,” says Edmonson. “Offering to help colleagues is a positive and powerful way to get help when you need it. You have to model the behaviors you want to see in others.”

Befriend coworkers that are kind, thoughtful, and optimistic. Surrounding yourself with people you like and who support you can help you manage difficult situations. Plus, positive and supportive people will make each day more pleasant.

Have you experienced kindness from a co-worker that you didn't expect? How did that affect you? Share your stories here or in our Facebook group.

Hi,
I have always tried to be kind, make eye contact, and learn names to keep my work environment civil. When a colleague is mean, which has happened to me, I just kept my head down, walked the other way or talked about them to those who felt like me. What I think all the attention to bullying has done was get me to rethink how a bully becomes one. Glad for the conversation. Hope it helps break the chain.

Angela Bonaby‍ absolutely! I feel like positivity can be contagious and it is so important in a service field!
It is true that showing a positive behavior is meaningful to colleagues and anyone who we serve as nurses within the community.
