Foster Hope In Your Professional Life.

Nurses are facing many hazards such as inadequate staffing and insufficient pay and recognition. But there is hope and some solutions.
Recently Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation and The Well-Being Initiative staff met with seven hundred plus nurses over two days virtually at the 2021 ANCC National Magnet Conference® and ANCC Pathway to Excellence Conference®. Nurses aired their concerns AND shared solutions. The following are some of those solutions the nurses came up with. (These are listed for informational purposes only and does not necessarily reflect the views of ANA.)
- Staffing
- Self- scheduling
- Hiring nursing students and non-CNAs
- Blended nurse approach, such as team nursing works to allow for breaks and provide support to get the work done
- Restoration rooms
- Include massage chairs, punching bag, salt lamp, essential oils, coloring books, medications, weighted blanket, reading books, notes to post on how they are feeling, and other relaxation equipment
- These should be designated rooms where staff can unwind
- Virtual reality option
- Engaged leadership
- Get feedback from the nursing team regularly and increase staff engagement.
- Recognize and appreciate healthcare staff who have stayed.
- Peer support ambassadors
- Spiritual care
- Tool-kits
- Tea time with pastoral care
- Provide food trucks at several locations and free lunches
- Peer-to-peer support
- Mental health care resources provided by employer
