Mentorship does not always begin with a formal program, scheduled meeting, or designated title.

Often, it happens in everyday moments: answering a question, sharing what you have learned, offering encouragement after a difficult shift, inviting another perspective, or demonstrating how you approach a challenge.

Nurses learn from one another every day. These interactions can shape confidence, professional growth, belonging, and how supported someone feels in the workplace. Whether you are an experienced nurse, new to the profession, or somewhere in between, you have something to contribute and opportunities to learn from the people around you.

Mentor in Motion: Leading by Example Every Day is a 10-day Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation® challenge designed to help nurses recognize mentorship as an active, ongoing practice. Rather than focusing only on traditional mentor-mentee relationships, this challenge explores how small, intentional actions can create opportunities for learning, connection, encouragement, and growth.

Nursing is built on shared knowledge. Clinical skills, professional judgment, communication, resilience, and leadership are strengthened when nurses have opportunities to learn with and from one another. Mentorship is also reciprocal. Being a mentor does not mean having every answer, and being experienced does not mean there is nothing left to learn. Nurses at every career stage bring knowledge, experiences, perspectives, and strengths that can benefit others.

This ten-day challenge is designed to help you:

  • Recognize everyday opportunities to mentor, encourage, and support others.
  • Lead by example through communication, professionalism, curiosity, allyship, and compassion.
  • Share knowledge and experience in ways that build confidence rather than judgment.
  • Create space to listen, learn from others, and welcome different perspectives.
  • Celebrate growth, progress, and contributions, your own and those of the people around you.

Creating a culture of mentorship is not the responsibility of one person. Workload, staffing, time, organizational culture, and access to formal development opportunities can all affect how easily nurses are able to connect and learn from one another. Still, within the moments where connection is possible, small actions can help create workplaces where people feel supported, respected, and encouraged to grow. Each day offers one focused, practical action rooted in everyday nursing experiences. The goal is not to become the perfect mentor. It is to become more intentional about the influence you already have and the opportunities you have to support others while remaining open to learning yourself.

You do not need a title to lead, and you do not need a formal mentoring relationship to make an impact. Sometimes leadership begins with what you model, what you share, and how you show up for someone else.

Though this challenge concluded on October 2, We invite you to try it with a friend or colleague. Get started here.

I enjoy mentoring my fellow students at school who are new graduate nurses. I have been a nurse for 23 years and I love to offer insight on the different topics we speak about in our class together. I value their fresh new outlook on the nursing field and they value my experience.
