Be Still

Published
Do you feel guilty when you’re not productive? This is common — research shows that many people tie busyness to their self-worth. Staying busy also helps some people distract themselves from the difficult emotions they’re experiencing. Being occupied means you don’t have time to think about uncomfortable feelings bubbling below the surface.

While staying busy is common, it’s not the healthiest way to get through life. Always doing something can cause you to feel:
  • Anxious
  • Frustrated or angry
  • Guilty
  • Inadequate
  • Lonely
  • Sad or hopeless
  • Stressed or overwhelmed

The solution to stress is not to stay busy — it’s to be still. That’s why today’s goal is to find some time to do nothing and not feel guilty about it!

Here’s one way to do it: When you wake up in the morning, set a timer for 2 minutes. Lie still in bed for that allotted time. Notice your senses of sight, sound, touch, and smell. How do the bed sheets feel against your skin? What noises do you hear? Do you smell certain scents, like laundry detergent or coffee brewing? Take a few deep breaths and be still before you start your busy day.

If you can, try to turn this moment of stillness into a daily habit. Use it to start your day on the right foot. Or take a moment out of your busy day to sit in stillness for a few minutes.
