Lead by Example

Nurses play a critical role in health care organizations. Every nurse is a leader, regardless of title. Nurses lead by example every day, in ways that include:
  • Acknowledging the experience or perspective of team members
  • Advocating for patients
  • Mentoring and sharing knowledge
  • Promoting quality care in your unit or organization

Leaders inspire colleagues, improve work environments, and enhance patient outcomes. Recognizing leadership strengths in yourself and others fosters a positive workplace culture.

Your Action for Today
Identify one leadership quality you admire in yourself (e.g., empathy, teamwork, or problem-solving) and use it when the opportunity arises. For inspiration, check out these 12 qualities of effective leadership.

Then, choose a leadership quality you admire in a peer and share it with them, or post a shout-out in your unit.

Bonus idea: Create a "Gratitude Wall" in your break room where team members publicly recognize each other.

Peer recognition improves morale and professional satisfaction. Even small affirmations can create a culture of support.
