Become An Antibiotic Steward

Published
Antibiotic resistance affects infection prevention and control. As antibiotics are used more often in healthcare and agricultural settings, the microorganisms that they are designed to destroy get stronger and more resistant over time.

One way to prevent antibiotic resistance is to ensure we’re giving the antibiotics only when necessary — for the right reasons at the right time. When you practice antibiotic stewardship, you’re committing to using antibiotics responsibly.

For example, nurses are often the ones who draw blood or take cultures for a patient. The sooner we collect samples and send them to the lab, the sooner prescribers will have the knowledge they need to make informed treatment decisions — and the less likely broad-spectrum antibiotics will be prescribed, possibly unnecessarily.

“Combatting antibiotic resistance is an interdisciplinary effort and nurses play a key role,” Rasheda Jones, PhD, RN, member of ANA Project Firstline team, reminds all nurses.

Today, make the decision to do more for antibiotic resistance. Take the time to administer antibiotics responsibly and educate your patients and their families about antibiotic resistance.
