Catch Up On Routine Vaccinations

Published
One of the simplest (and proven) ways to prevent the spread of infection is by getting vaccinated.

When people choose not to get vaccinated or not to get their children vaccinated, they can contribute to the spread of infection or an outbreak. As a nurse, you can set the example. Now is an excellent opportunity to catch up on any missed or delayed vaccines. Talk to your primary care provider (PCP) about which immunizations you may need based on your age and risk factors.

The CDC recommends these immunizations for health care workers who are at risk of contracting serious, sometimes fatal diseases:
  • Hepatitis B
  • Influenza (flu)
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)
  • Meningococcal
  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis).
  • Varicella (chickenpox)

ANA also recommends that nurses get vaccinated against COVID-19. ANA does not support any exemptions from immunization other those for medical contraindications.

Not sure which immunizations you need to catch up on? Use this Vaccine Assessment Tool from the CDC.
