Be An Agent For Change

As a nurse, you have a responsibility to set an example for infection prevention and control. You are also an educator and advocate for excellent and safe patient care.

One way is to stand your ground or call a timeout if you think infection control policies and procedures aren’t being followed. For example, if you have concerns about the sterile field breaking, or that a patient might have an infectious disease and needs to be isolated, speak up.

Another way to set an example is through a positive deviance strategy. Health care personnel who are good examples of hand hygiene practice have the power to change peer behavior. Being a positive deviant means you motivate others to follow suit — and it definitely works for hand hygiene. One study found that nursing units with a positive deviant-driven hand hygiene program had a significant increase in hand hygiene adherence and a reduction in healthcare-associated infection (HAI) incidence.

Set an example for those around you. Take infection prevention seriously by being a model of good hand hygiene for others.

Learn more about external and internal motivators for hand hygiene.
