Connection is an essential part of well-being. Yet in healthcare and daily life, it can be difficult to maintain. Long shifts, emotional labor, competing responsibilities, and workplace stress can contribute to isolation, disconnection, and a reduced sense of support.
These experiences are not always visible. They often build gradually and can affect mood, resilience, fulfillment, and overall quality of life.
Meaningful connection supports emotional well-being, belonging, and life satisfaction. Strong relationships with colleagues, family, friends, and community can help nurses feel supported, valued, and less alone.
Connection also supports safety. When people feel respected, included, and supported, they may be more likely to communicate clearly, ask for help, notice when others are struggling, and speak up when concerns arise, contributing to healthier teams and safer environments.
Addressing connection is central to the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation® Quality of Life domain, which focuses on fulfillment, relationships, purpose, and overall life satisfaction.
This ten-day challenge is designed to help you:
- Recognize the role connection plays in quality of life and well-being
- Identify sources of support in personal and professional life
- Practice small actions that strengthen belonging, trust, and communication
- Reflect on how connection supports safety, shared responsibility, and healthier environments
Each day offers one focused, practical action rooted in real nursing experiences. Through awareness, reflection, and small intentional steps, we can strengthen connection and move from me to we together.

How are you doing in the challenge?
We spend most of our waking hours at work Who better to seek out support than from our peers who provide insight and advice
Deb Stuart RN OR
@DebStuart exactly!
So far so good. Reconnected with some good friends out of state and spent some quality time with local friends.
I'm not getting the emails? Has it started
@John Singletary it has started. Make sure to check your Promotions and Spam folders - they often end up there. They usually go out a little after 6pm EST
Where I work, we have a virtual recognition board where good deeds large and small can be posted on our intranet site for all to see. It's a little thing, but it can mean a lot.
We’ve got a weekly Friday Wrap-up email that goes out with kudos. It’s better now that it doesn’t seem to be filled with the “teacher’s pets” like it was initially
@RTC I love this idea! It sounds like it makes it easy to make appreciation known and easy to check!
I like having a bestie at work who can joke with me and help get through the difficult times that we inevitably face as a bedside nurse in a busy urban county hospital.
@RTC close friends at work can really make tough days more manageable!
