New Bern was under siege from high winds, rains, and record-setting flood waters for five days.  How did CarolinaEast nurses stay healthy and resilient during the storm?  By excelling with innovation and creative problem-solving – two skills nurses have mastered.

In preparation of the storm, the CarolinaEast Pathway Taskforce prepared goody bags for the nursing staff that would be staying in the facility throughout the storm.  The goody bags contained treats such as fuzzy bedroom slippers, toiletries, and snacks.  Each bag came with a handwritten note written to thank the nursing recipient for his or her commitment to the health and safety of the New Bern community.  The bags were placed in the nurse sleeping quarters along with a mint on each pillow.  The sleeping quarters and the
Nursing Administration corridor were adorned with hurricane party decorations.

With so many staff nurses making the commitment to stay in the hospital for the duration of Hurricane Florence, CarolinaEast nurses got creative in how they chose to pass their down time.  Card games and other competitions popped up.  The hospital auditorium was transformed into a movie theater for staff to enjoy between shifts.  Ice cream sundaes were served in the hospital’s cafeteria.  A team of Healthy Nurses initiated a laundry brigade for staff members in need of fresh essentials.  The nurses and all of the CarolinaEast family remained upbeat and demonstrated phenomenal team work as they worked tirelessly to provide excellent patient care to a community in crisis.

It will be years before New Bern, North Carolina returns to its pre-hurricane normalcy.  The CarolinaEast family is committed to supporting the health of our employees and our community as we rebuild.
