Use Effective Strategies to Turn Healthy Food Choices Into Habits

You made it to Day 10! You’ve learned how, why, and when your cravings happen. You know how to swap healthy foods in and unhealthy foods out of your diet. So, how do you make these changes stick? A few simple, effective strategies can help you permanently change your behavior.

Your Action for Today
Deploy one or more of these tactics to cement healthy eating habits into your lifestyle:
  • Make yourself accountable: Share your food choices and goals with family, friends, and coworkers. You’ll be more accountable and feel supported — and your new behavior may influence them to make healthy changes as well.
  • Log meals and snacks in a food journal: The simple act of documenting your food choices can make a big difference in your eating habits. Use what works for you, including online tools, mobile apps, or old-fashioned paper and pen.
  • Plate beautifully: As 1st-century Roman Marcus Gavius Apicius said, “We eat first with our eyes.” When you make nutritious food look beautiful, your mind and body will feel more excited about eating it. And excitement will keep you coming back.
  • Tie new behaviors to established routines: Repetition is key to permanent change. Make it easy to create a new habit by tying it to something else you do. Eat a handful of almonds with your morning coffee instead of biscotti. Drink a glass of water before you eat a snack or meal. Make air-popped popcorn before you watch your favorite TV show.

It’s much easier to create long-lasting habits when we make healthy eating easy, fun, and accountable.
