4 Ways to be kind to yourself - Sustain Humanity with Kindness Challenge - Day 1

Be Kind to Yourself First

Nurses are natural caregivers — it’s in the job description. Many nurses put the well-being of others first, often to the detriment of their own health. However, research shows that nurses provide better care when they are physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy.

Provision 5 of the American Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics states that “Nurses have a duty to take care of their own health and safety.” You can explore Provision 5 and other key provisions here. Enroll in accredited, peer-reviewed online courses for a deep dive into the Code of Ethics for Nurses today. You’ll engage with key provisions, essential concepts, and reflective exercises to gain practical strategies for handling ethical challenges.

So, the first act of kindness in our challenge is self-kindness. By caring for yourself, you can build a stronger foundation to care for others.

Your Action for Today
Practice one nourishing act of self-care. This can be any activity that replenishes your emotional, physical, mental, or spiritual well-being in a deep and sustaining way.

Nourishing self-care restores balance, builds resilience, and helps you feel more grounded and whole.

Consider one of these activities (or choose something else you love):
  • Hydrate: It’s easy to overlook proper hydration when you’re busy, but it’s essential to your health. You may be surprised by how much better you feel when you drink adequate water and fluids. Aim for at least 8 8-ounce glasses.
  • Exercise in nature: Take a hike, practice yoga, garden, go for a bike ride — any activity in the great outdoors benefits both your body and brain.
  • Journal: Writing down your thoughts and feelings is a great way to support your mental and emotional health. Even just a few sentences can have a beneficial impact. Not sure how to start? Focus on one thing you’re grateful for.
  • Sleep: A nice 30-minute nap can restore your energy and alertness and boost your mood.

Short on time? Even a few minutes of self-care can make a difference in your energy levels and mood. Try one of these 15-minute or less ideas.

Bonus Action: Share your activity with your team and encourage them to do the same. Create a ripple effect of self-care and witness the impact it has on each of you!
