3 Ways to Start a Workplace Kindness Wave - Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Sustain Humanity with Kindness Challenge - Day 7
Start a Workplace Kindness Wave
Healthcare organizations benefit from a culture built on kindness, according to international research. Kindness leads to less stress, reduced burnout, and greater trust among healthcare workers. It also results in better patient outcomes.
Whether you’re in management or serve as a frontline care provider, you can lead a kindness charge within your workplace. In fact, studies show peer-led initiatives can have greater impact and adoption than employer-led programs. So, don’t be afraid to lead by example!
Your Action for Today
Consider these three ways to initiate a workplace kindness contest. Consider one of these ideas:
- “Caught Being Kind” contest: Ask team members to anonymously submit notes about a colleague’s act of kindness. Post the notes on a public board, in a group chat, or in a team newsletter. At the end of a week or month, draw a name from the submissions for a small prize.
- Kindness bingo: Create a bingo board for your break room with a different act of kindness in each square. When a team member completes an act, they sign their name in the square. When they complete a row, their name is added to a hat for a weekly prize drawing.
- Pass the kindness token: Choose a physical token like a small stuffed animal or a keychain. Treat a coworker to an act of kindness and give them the token. They must “pass the token” by doing something kind for another coworker within 48 hours. After everyone passes the token, treat the team to a reward.
These contests don’t require much money or time, but they can dramatically increase morale, connection, and positivity.
