3 Opportunities to Reduce Waste or Improve Energy Use — Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation — Green Your Routine Challenge — Day 6
Assess Your Work Environment
A recent study found that most nurses feel reducing waste and conserving resources are important within the health care industry. However, they also reported that these efforts end up on the back burner because of the pressing demands of patient care. Time constraints and lack of support can be barriers as well.
The good news is that small, strategic actions can help you overcome those barriers and make a meaningful impact. You can build momentum toward team-level and system-wide changes.
Your Action for Today
Walk through your unit and note 3 opportunities to reduce waste or improve energy use. Look for achievable changes such as:
-
Energy savers: In empty hospital rooms, turn off the lights and close the blinds.
-
Recycle: Check that recycling bins are clearly labeled and encourage coworkers to use them. If they’re not clearly labeled, speak with your environmental services department. If your workplace doesn’t have a recycling program or your program is not as robust as it could be, advocate for improvements. Recommend climate-friendly products and materials made from recycled waste to your employer or purchasing department.
-
Reuse: Ensure you’re using a reusable water bottle and food containers (see Day 2). Speak with infection control, purchasing, and nurse leaders to see if reusable gowns or other reusable medical products are feasible.
Bonus Action: Join or create a sustainability team, council, or committee at your workplace. Together, advocate for environmental upgrades that benefit everyone.
