Your Day 2 Tip —  1 Quick thing you can do right now to avoid food waste!

Set the Right Fridge and Freezer Temps

The first step in preventing spoiled food waste is to store it at the right temperature. Proper food storage preserves freshness and guards against microorganisms like Salmonella and E. coli.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, bacteria grow quickly at temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit and can double in number in just 20 minutes. Yuck!

Your Action for Today

Ensure your refrigerator and freezer are set correctly. This means 40°F for refrigerators and 0°F for freezers. A recent European study found that most household refrigerators measure 43.5°F, which increases the risk of bacteria growth.

If you don’t know how to check or adjust temperatures, check your owner’s manual online or search for a video tutorial. You can also purchase a simple, affordable refrigerator thermometer to monitor temperature accurately, helping reduce spoilage and waste.

Day 3 sneak peek: Store fruits and vegetables the right way, so they’ll last longer.
