3 Factors to Consider When Choosing Outdoor Workout Gear — Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation® FitMind Focus: Building Mental Resilience for Physical Fitness Challenge, sponsored by Humana — Day 6
Dress the Part
When the temperature drops, the right gear can make a big difference in both how you feel and how long you can comfortably exercise outside.
Three factors to keep in mind when choosing your outdoor exercise wear are:
- Moisture levels
- Temperature
- Wind chill
Layering your clothes is the key to comfort and safety. Start with a moisture-wicking layer closest to your skin. Then add warm fleece or wool, followed by a waterproof or windproof outer layer.
Don’t forget to protect your extremities! When your body is cold, blood is directed to your core. This is why your hands, feet, and head feel cold more quickly. Add gloves, warm socks, a hat, and a face mask when it’s frigid.
Your Action for Tonight
Take stock of your workout wear and ensure you have the appropriate pieces for cold weather.
Bonus Action: Ask your team to share their go-to winter wear items for different activities, like biking, hiking, and jogging.
