4 Ways to Change it Up & Add Some Sizzle to Your Fitness Routine — Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation® FitMind Focus: Building Mental Resilience for Physical Fitness Challenge, sponsored by Humana — Day 7
Change It Up
Drizzly, gray skies and shorter days can lead to feelings of fatigue, boredom, or lack of motivation called “winter blues.” Your usual routine may not excite or inspire you the way it once did. If that happens, shake things up and see what happens!
You’ve heard the saying, “Variety is the spice of life.” As it turns out, there is a biological reason for this! When you try something new or different, your brain releases dopamine, a “feel-good” chemical.
Adding some variety to your routine can:
- Boost mood: New experiences can spark feelings of excitement, happiness, and satisfaction.
- Enhance memory: Excitement helps your brain form new connections and improves your ability to retain information.
- Spark creativity: Trying something new can change your perspective, leading you to see things in new ways.
Your Action for Tonight
Add some sizzle to your fitness routine! Try different ways to raise your heart rate, such as:
- A new cardio class
- Dancing to your favorite music
- Ice skating
- Rebounding
You can also modify your existing routine. Change your jogging route, walk instead of driving to your favorite coffee shop, or create a new workout playlist.
Bonus Action: You’re probably not the only one feeling a little “blah” right now. Invite your peers, friends, or family members to join you in a new, fun activity!
Note: Deeper feelings of sadness or depression that last longer than a few days may be signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Talk with your primary care provider or a mental health professional if you have concerns.
