Use Positive Visualizations to Help You Slay Your Winter Workouts — Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation® FitMind Focus: Building Mental Resilience for Physical Fitness Challenge, sponsored by Humana — Day 8
Visualize Your Win
Your mind is a powerful ally in your quest to stay fit. Visualization, also called mental imagery, can help you improve your physical performance, boost motivation, and increase your sense of satisfaction. These are all very helpful when you need a little spark during the colder, darker months of the year!
A study of athletes found that those who positively visualized their weight-lifting routines achieved significantly greater strength gains than athletes who didn’t use visualization. Their “mental rehearsal” enhanced their results.
The best part is that anyone can use visualization to help reach their goals!
Your Action for Tonight
Write down a fitness goal you want to achieve. Next, picture in your mind what you will do to reach your goal. For instance, if you’d like to jog 3 miles, visualize:
- Putting on your jogging gear and running shoes
- The route you will run
- Everything you will see, hear, and smell on your run
- How you will feel when you finish
- Getting stronger and jogging longer each time
Repeat the visualization before each exercise session. Be sure to track your progress, so you can see how much your fitness improves!
Join us on day 9: A sneak peek - Implement a reward system to reinforce healthy habits.
