Assume Positive Intent with This Calming Mantra — Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation™ Resolve Workplace Conflict — With Confidence Challenge — Day 2
Day 2 — Assume Positive Intent
During a conflict, it’s easy to assume another person’s feelings or motivations are negative. This is especially true if you’re examining the conflict through a scarcity lens (see Day 1). However, assuming the worst can lead to misunderstandings, a breakdown of trust, and negatively impact our relationships.
On the other hand, assuming the best in others is a great way to build trust, reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, and maintain an open mind. This is key to resolving conflict.
Your Action for Today
Set an intention to assume positive intent the next time conflict arises. Use a calming mantra like, “I respond, I don’t react,” to ground yourself before conversations. Focus on staying open, curious, and respectful. Ask questions to better understand how the other person feels.
Bonus Action: You can help coworkers improve their conflict resolution skills, too. Encourage your team to pause and seek to understand, instead of reacting.
