3 Steps to Get You Closer to Achieving Your Health Goals — Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation™ Picture Your Health Challenge — Day 1
Day 1 — Clarify Your “Why”
Studies show that goal setting can help people start and maintain healthy behaviors. But it’s not enough to say, “I will be healthier this year.” You’ll need to identify the reason why you will make healthier choices — know what’s driving your desired outcome. Attaching a goal to something you value helps keep you motivated to keep progressing, even when challenges arise.
Step 1: Start with your goal, what are you hoping to achieve?
Step 2: Once you have identified your goal, then ask why you want to strive toward it. What will it give you? Your “why” should be: specific, personal and meaningful.
For instance, if your goal is “Exercising more,” what is your “why” behind it? Consider the following:
-
Feeling stronger and more energetic
-
Enjoying life more fully, without fatigue
-
Having more energy for family or hobbies
-
Improving or preventing health issues
Step 3: Once you clarify your “why,” assign yourself the actions required to reach your goal.
Your Action for Tonight
Reflect on what wellness means to you in 2026. In your journal, write down your “why” or “whys” and 3 benefits of making your goals happen. Next, write down the consequences of not reaching your desired outcome. How might it impact your physical, mental, or emotional health?
Bonus Action: Share your core “why” with a peer, mentor, friend, or family member. This will help keep you accountable throughout the year.
