Why Incivility and Bullying Matter in Nursing: How Silence Normalizes Harm — Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation® Stand Up for Safety: The Workplace Violence Awareness & Prevention Challenge — Day 3
Day 3 — Why This Matters
Bullying and incivility don’t just affect morale; they directly impact nurse well-being, retention, and patient safety. When these behaviors are repeated or left unaddressed, they contribute to chronic stress, burnout, disengagement, and emotional exhaustion.
Over time, even subtle behaviors can accumulate, shaping a work environment where fear, hesitation, or silence become the norm. When nurses do not feel safe to speak up, communication breaks down, teamwork suffers, and the risk to patient care increases.
Silence can unintentionally reinforce harmful behaviors. When concerns are dismissed, minimized, or ignored, it sends a message about what is tolerated. In contrast, speaking up, supporting one another, and creating space for respectful dialogue can help shift workplace culture toward safety, accountability, and trust.
No one does their best work under fear or threat.
Join us on day 4: A sneak peek - Consider how leadership and workplace culture shape what gets tolerated and what gets addressed.
