How Active Listening Strengthens Trust, Connection, and Psychological Safety — Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation™ From Me to We: The Power of Connection Challenge — Day 4
Day 4 — Listening to Understand
Listening is one of the clearest ways to communicate respect. It helps build trust, reduce misunderstandings, and strengthen connection.
For nurses, listening is central to relationships with patients, families, colleagues, and loved ones. In professional settings, listening can also support safety by improving communication and helping concerns surface earlier.
Listening to understand means slowing down enough to hear what someone is saying before deciding how to respond.
Your Action for Today
Practice intentional listening in one conversation today. Try to:
- Put away distractions
- Let the person finish speaking
- Ask one open-ended question
- Reflect back what you heard
- Avoid immediately fixing, interrupting, or redirecting
You might say, “What I’m hearing is…” or “Can you tell me more about that?”
Join us on day 5: A sneak peek - Reflect on the role of support and asking for help.
