Recognize Others
Published
It's day 3 of the Cultivate Gratitude challenge.
Recognizing nurses for their skills, dedication, and caring is crucial, especially in times of high-stress. Research shows that meaningful recognition can renew and replenish a nurse’s commitment to their profession. How often do you recognize and show appreciation to the other nurses in your life?
Today is a great day to start. Use these ideas to incorporate more meaningful nurse recognition into the workplace:
- Send kudos to a coworker’s supervisor about the great job they’re doing
- Give shout-outs during meetings
- Deliver handwritten notes with compliments and praise
- Say “thank you” more often
- Share a small token to that special colleague like a card or a hand-picked flower
- Start a gratitude tree on a whiteboard
- Nominate a colleague for an honor or award
- Advocate for meaningful recognition at your workplace

With the challenges of a demanding pandemic, UT Southwestern also makes sure to show gratitude and appreciation to all workers. The “I Am UTSW” social media campaign, which began in 2020 but is ongoing, recognizes those who’ve gone above and beyond. Specifically, it thanks those who took on new/additional roles or sacrificed major time commitments over the past year.
