Find What Grounds You

Published
Tonight, reflect back on your day to pinpoint how you reacted to stressful moments. Also consider, generally what is your coping mechanism for times of stress and anxiety? When you’re feeling anxious, what do you do to calm yourself down?

If you answered, “I don’t know,” it’s time to find an activity or tactic that might help. Whatever it is for you should bring a sense of relief, like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. You should be able to rely on it during times of extreme stress.

For example, keep a small trinket or talisman in your pocket. It could be a seashell or a rock from a great vacation or a hand-me-down charm from a family member. Touch it when you feel stressed. Let it mentally transport you to that special time in your life.

Here are other ideas to consider:
  • Coloring in an adult coloring book
  • Visiting the chapel or restoration/resiliency room at work
  • Reciting a positive internal mantra, such as “I am strong”
  • Exercising, like going for a run outside
  • Journaling
  • Aromatherapy
  • Meditation
