Satisfy a Sweet Craving With Tasty, Nutritious Treats

If you have a sweet tooth, chances are you face temptation on every shift. Candy and pastries are often in abundance in health care settings. Nurses educate patients on proper nutrition, so it’s important to lead by example. Become a model for others by conquering your sugar craving with simple food swaps.

Your Action for Today
Arm yourself with snacks that zap your need for sweets. Try these alternatives to candy and other sugary treats:
  • Nut butter dates: Add a dab of peanut or cashew butter to a naturally sweet date. This snack tastes like a chewy candy bar, but contains fiber, potassium, and protein instead of processed sugar.
  • Dark chocolate and almonds: When that chocolate craving hits, you don’t have to resist it completely. Simply choose a square of dark or bittersweet. Look for 70% or higher cocoa content to reap the health benefits of antioxidants and less sugar. Combined with a small handful of almonds, this treat may also lower your LDL cholesterol.
  • Greek yogurt with fruit and nuts: Instead of a cookie or pastry, reach for this satisfying snack. Add sliced bananas, berries, or peaches and a small drizzle of honey to lightly sweeten plain Greek yogurt. Nuts provide a satisfying crunch and healthy fat (vs. butter or shortening in a cookie).
  • Banana “nice” cream: If ice cream is your Achilles heel, try this simple hack. Freeze a few bananas and puree them until creamy. Add some chopped dark chocolate and/or walnuts and enjoy a sweet dessert without guilt.

Knowing you have healthy options for indulging your sweet tooth will make it easier to stick to your nutritional goals.
