4 Ways to Show Kindness Through Listening —Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation — Sustain Humanity with Kindness Challenge — Day 8
Show Kindness Through Listening
Lending an empathetic ear can be the best act of kindness when a friend, patient, or colleague needs support. Active listening, where you stay focused and engaged when someone else is speaking, shows you care about the other person’s thoughts and feelings.
Listening with the intention of understanding someone’s perspective (without judgment) can:
- Build trust between you and the speaker
- De-escalate tension during a stressful situation
- Increase feelings of compassion — and self-compassion (see Day 2)
- Signal respect for others
Your Action for Today
In your next conversation, focus on listening to the other person (rather than formulating your response). Stay mindful and present to what is being said. Ask questions to show you’re engaged and seeking to understand their point of view.
Active listening is an important skill within nursing as well as interpersonal relationships. The good news is, it can be learned and strengthened with practice!
