4 Ways to Advocate for Policy Change — Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation — Green Your Routine Challenge — Day 4
Use Your Voice to Advocate
Nurses are among the most trusted voices of any profession. According to a recent Gallup poll, nearly 80% of Americans feel nurses’ honesty and ethical standards are “high” or “very high.” That’s an empowering statistic!
This level of trust gives you a unique opportunity to raise awareness, shape public opinion, and inspire action on climate-health issues.
While individual actions are important, strong climate policies like investing in clean energy and green infrastructure can lead to larger-scale change. You can take up the charge.
Your Action for Today
Advocate for one policy change that’s important to you. Leverage your expertise and nursing role to:
- Contact a local elected official and let them know you support environmentally friendly legislation. Educate them on the risks and impact of climate change in your community.
- Engage with your workplace’s leadership on ways to make your organization’s health care practices more sustainable.
- Join the efforts of your State Nurses Association, your specialty nursing organization, and/or the American Nurses Association (ANA) to advocate for environmental justice at a local or national level.
- Explore and join local community or grassroots organizations where you live.
Bonus Action: Consider joining the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE), a free organization dedicated to environmental health. ANHE offers many opportunities to engage, educate, and mobilize support for environmental justice.
If you’re new to advocacy or it feels a little intimidating, you might start by posting an article on your social media or signing a petition aligned with your values.
