Catch Those Zs for Heart Ease - Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Your Heart Needs Love Too Challenge, sponsored by Humana - Day 8

Ever wondered if your rest affects more than just your energy levels? Turns out, your heart has a stake in your sleep quality, too.

Poor sleep is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular issues. Disrupted sleep can throw off vital processes like blood pressure regulation and inflammation control, putting your heart at risk.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently classified sleep as one of Life's Essential 8™, a set of key measures to promote and maintain cardiovascular health. It’s best to aim for 7 to 9 hours of continuous, recuperative sleep each night to support your cardiovascular well-being.

Here’s what you can do to make sure your sleep is the highest quality:
  • Establish a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Indulge in a calming, pre-sleep routine. (You could start with some relaxing music or a warm bubble bath.)
  • Create a sleep-friendly environment (i.e., keep the room dark and cool).
  • Avoid evening caffeine.
  • Ditch screens an hour before bed.
