Making Time for Things That Bring Me Joy

Published
I have been a nurse for four years, and started my nursing career at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. I worked the majority of that time in the ICU, and my mental health suffered for the following years from the moral delimmas and burnout I experienced in those first two years. I struggled with PTSD and severe depression. I'm doing much better now, my mental health is in a much better place after taking time away from nursing, then returning to a facility that I've truly fallen in love with. I transferred to a new specialty, labor and delivery, and it has renewed my excitement for nursing. I still struggle to find time for joy and relaxation, as well as my hobbies, which are crucial to my contentment outside of the hospital. I'm committing to making time for things that make me happy that are for me and not just for work or my family, including finishing the crochet project I started and writing more poetry. These things help me be a more content, joyful version of myself and gives me the mental break I need to bring my best to my family, coworkers, and patients.
