Age, Menopause, Hormones Oh My!

Published
Getting older takes on different challenges.  Since having three children, I have been in a routine of getting up every two hours to go to the bathroom and check in on the kids while they were sleeping.  Now that I am over 50 I am still in this rut but it is now due to age.  I try not to drink liquids after 9 PM.  I already had bladder surgery to fix my prolapsed bladder, and I make sure to see my gynecologist on a yearly basis.  I have seen a pulmonary doctor to rule out sleep apnea, and even though I have not been formally diagnosed with asthma my pulmonary doctor has ordered an inhaler to help during the change in seasons due to my seasonal allergies.  The one thing that has helped me get a better quality sleep is exercising one hour before I go to bed, or just soaking in a warm tub for 15 mins.  Granted this doesn't always work but it does help me.
I also see a "health & wellness" doctor who tracks my hormone levels.  While going through peri-menopause the hormones really can wreak havoc on a woman's body which affects many different areas like sleep, joint/body aches, urinary incontinence, constipation, etc.   What I recently found out is even though women go through peri-menopause and menopause - we are still suppose to have some levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.  In my case, I found out that I do not have any progesterone nor testosterone - this is not NORMAL; therefore, my doctor is trying to help me ease through menopause as best as she can. My health & wellness doctor also performs extensive allergy testing as well as hormone, and vitamin levels which play key roles in maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a woman ages.
So here's to aging gracefully.
