If there is one organization that wholeheartedly supports healthy lifestyle behaviors as the number one way to prevent, treat, and reverse disease, it’s the ACLM. Lifestyle medicine (which is literally in its name) is the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic interventions as a first-treatment option. Such interventions are pillars of self-care and healthy living, including:
  • Whole-food, plant-predominant eating patterns
  • Regular physical activity
  • Restorative sleep
  • Stress management
  • Avoidance of risky substances
  • Positive social connection

Promoting these lifestyle behaviors among its own staff and members makes ACLM a natural fit as a partner of HNHN. ACLM prioritizes nurse health and wellness through lifestyle medicine’s pillars of self-care and healthy living and uses educational and insightful resources to do so. Founded more than 15 years ago, ACLM equips and empowers its members to practice evidence-based lifestyle medicine through:
  • Advocacy
  • Certification opportunities
  • Clinical practice and reimbursement tools
  • Events and educational offerings
  • Networking opportunities
  • Patient education resources

The ACLM Annual Conference
Every year, ACLM hosts an annual conference that addresses many of the common noncommunicable chronic diseases. It focuses on ways to utilize lifestyle to prevent, halt, and in some cases, reverse those conditions. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ACLM will host their 2021 conference (scheduled for November 7–10) virtually this year.

Nurses have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of lifestyle medicine at ACLM’s CME/CE accredited conference. They will hear from a variety of speakers who focus on health and wellness topics. An exhibitor pavilion, networking opportunities, and pre- and post-conference workshops offer unique ways to connect with like-minded peers. Extracurricular activities include guided morning stretches/yoga, and a 5K run/walk.

Promoting Lifestyle Medicine
The annual conference is just one of many ways ACLM promotes lifestyle medicine among nurses and other medical professionals. The organization also hosts monthly virtual member meetings featuring nurses who specialize in lifestyle medicine. Three of its most popular CE/CME courses include: Food as Medicine, Reversing Type 2 Diabetes, and Physician and Health Professional Well-Being Course, available for purchase.

ACLM offers many complimentary downloads, educational resources, and webinars. Its recent webinar featuring lifestyle medicine nurses was especially popular, and other popular resources include:
“Nurses can truly impact the ones they care for by using evidence-based lifestyle interventions to help prevent, stop, and in some cases, even reverse chronic diseases,” said Kelly Freeman, MSN, AGPCNP-BC, DipACLM, Director of Academic Advancement. “ACLM offers the education, tools, and resources for nurses to best affect health outcomes.”

Using Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation as inspiration, ACLM takes health and wellness to the next level. Yes, lifestyle medicine is at its core, but bringing those principles to medical professionals for their own self-care, just like HNHN does, is a step beyond. In fact, many of the ACLM members are active participants in the HNHN Facebook Group and have been featured in the HNHN newsletter.

Together, the two organizations promote healthy living through healthy lifestyles. (updated 9/8/21)
