DYK Certain Diets Can Cause Dehydration?
Hydration doesn’t just come from the fluids you drink. Certain lifestyle habits — including what you eat — can affect how hydrated you are. And some of the most popular eating plans can make you more dehydrated. Lauren Rocha, Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist, points out, “water plays a role in fat, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism. Adequate hydration is critical to support mitochondria function and may contribute to weight loss goals.”
Tonight think about your current diet and re-consider if you are following a diet plan that can cause dehydration, especially if it is one that restricts water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.
There are pros and cons to every eating plan, but these are linked to an increased risk of dehydration:
- High-protein diets (Dukan, paleo)
- Ketogenic (keto) diet
- Intermittent fasting
- Dry fasting
- Atkins (low carb) diet
If you’re on a diet that restricts water-rich foods, try to make up for the lost hydration by drinking more water. Water is calorie-free and healthy no matter how you eat or diet.
