Start Small

Take a moment to think about what kind of self-care you're lacking right now. Check in with yourself by asking, “How am I feeling? What do I need in this moment?” Before you decide on what you will do as self-care, it’s important to take time for self-awareness.

When you want to add healthy self-care habits into your routine, it's easy to set your sights on something lofty and often difficult to attain, like running your first marathon or losing 20 pounds. Small goals are easier to achieve. They are simple and feel less overwhelming because the expectations are realistic. And once we achieve them, that sense of satisfaction boosts us up and gives us the momentum to set a bigger goal. They’re like stepping stones.

As you embark on this self-care challenge, we encourage you to think small. This isn’t about making a massive shift to your daily routine. It’s about incorporating one small self-care task that will improve your health and well-being. It could be as simple as:
  • Drinking more water
  • Working up to daily exercise
  • Aspiring to a regular meditation practice
  • Saying a motivational mantra each morning
  • Taking a daily walk outside
  • Pausing to take some deep breaths when you feel anxious

We’ve got even more self-care ideas in our blog post about micro-restorative practices. You can even use many of these during your shift at work.

What small change do you plan to make for self-care? Share it here or reply to us on Twitter, in our private Facebook group or Instagram. Remember to tag us with #healthynurse!
