Assess whether your work environment is a psychologically safe space with this 10 minute assessment — Cultivate a Safe and Open Workplace — Day 3 — Healthy Nurse, Nurse, Healthy Nation
Day 3 - Recognize and Address Bias in Patient Care and Team Dynamics
Implicit bias is an unconscious prejudice or negative attitude toward certain types of people. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), implicit bias may result from environmental influences, experiences, or learned associations among social groups. It can encompass race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, appearance, or behaviors.
In nursing, implicit bias affects patient care and interactions with team members. It can have a negative impact on outcomes and workplace culture. Recognizing and addressing bias in health care is essential for fair, ethical, and high-quality nursing.
Your Action for Today
Take a 10-minute online implicit bias test (it’s free) to understand your own unconscious attitudes or prejudices. Reflect on the results, then observe interactions in your unit or team. Are all voices heard? Are all people treated the same way?
Armed with this new knowledge, consider how you can bring awareness of implicit bias into your interactions with colleagues and patients. Invite a friend, family member, or colleague to ANA’s free webinar series that explores actionable strategies to dismantle racism and cultivate inclusivity, “Equity in Action — Dismantling Racism in Nursing.”
