The Quality of Your Social Connections Matter — Reach Out to Share a Moment with Someone in Your Life

A recent study found that engaging in quality conversation each day improves your well-being. Whether it’s sharing a story, listening to and supporting a friend, or seeking emotional support for yourself, connection is the key. Talking with others boosts your mood, reduces stress, and improves feelings of anxiety and depression.

Your Action for Today
Engage in quality communication with 1 person. Reach out to catch up, ask someone how they’re doing (and offer support), or share a triumph or challenge. Put yourself in a “connecting” mindset through:
  • 1 minute of gratitude: Write an email or message to a colleague, friend, or family member expressing gratitude for your relationship. Offer a sincere compliment and tell them how much they mean to you.
  • 5 minutes of positive reflection: Read uplifting messages you’ve received from a friend or family member or scroll through photos and videos of happy memories together.
  • 5 minutes of physical movement: Play. Roll a ball for your dog or cat, or have a quick hide-and-seek session with your child. You might also “play” outside by gardening, picking wildflowers, or practicing sunrise (or sunset) yoga.

Pay attention to how you feel before and after your social interaction today. Continue connecting with at least 1 person each day for sustained benefits.
