Find a way to laugh (and cry) your way to well-being in today's 1-5-5 exercise — Day 8 Tip — Gratitude, Growth, and Go: The 1-5-5 Challenge for Mental Well-Being, sponsored by Humana — Healthy Nurse, Nurse, Healthy Nation
Let Go of Stress Through Laughter and Tears
You’ve heard the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, as laughter releases endorphins in the brain, improves mood and lowers blood pressure. Crying provides similar benefits by relieving emotional stress and anxiety. Tears actually help your body flush out the stress hormone cortisol. So, when you feel the need to shed a few, go ahead and let them out!
Your Action for Today
Get in touch with your emotions and allow yourself to laugh or cry at least once. Share a funny meme or video with a friend for the added benefit of social connection. Watch your favorite sad movie and let yourself sob, knowing it’s a vital part of self-care. Focus today’s 1-5-5 exercises around laughing or crying:
- 1 minute of gratitude: Think back to your funniest memory. Picture the details in your mind. Where were you? Who were you with? What made the situation so humorous? Give thanks for the memory and the lasting impact it has had.
- 5 minutes of positive reflection: Find an uplifting and warm-hearted video that tugs at your heartstrings. Allow yourself to feel all the emotions it elicits and pay attention to your mood afterwards. Do you feel happier, lighter, or calmer?
- 5 minutes of physical activity: Guess what? Laughter counts as physical activity! Exercise your cardiovascular and respiratory systems and abdominal muscles with 5 minutes of belly laughs. Listen to a comedy podcast (here’s a helpful list) and feel your stress melt away with each guffaw.
Day 9 sneak peek: Use mindfulness to reduce stress, feel calmer, and regulate your emotions.
