Identify Your "Go-To" Work Friend AND 4 Ways You Can Foster New Friendships — Power of Peers challenge — Day 1 — Healthy Nurse, Nurse, Healthy Nation
Identify Your "Go-To" Work Friend
Research shows that having a close friendship at work positively impacts job performance, retention, and overall well-being. A report from Gallup found people who strongly agree that they have a “best friend” at work are 7 times more likely to be engaged in their jobs than people who don’t.
Workplace friendships are a key aspect of a supportive work culture. A “go-to” friend you can share a laugh with or trust when you need to vent supports your mental and emotional wellness.
Your Action for Today
Identify at least one trusted colleague and let them know you are there for them, too. If this action seems difficult, or you feel isolated in your work environment, you can take steps to foster a new friendship. Consider:
- Joining a committee or club with people who share your interests
- Sending an encouraging message to someone who might need it
- Sharing a break with a colleague you relate to
- Starting a conversation with a coworker (and detaching from your phone)
Establishing your “go-to” friend will help you create a stronger sense of camaraderie and connection to boost your well-being at work.
