How are you feeling?

We’re not just asking about how you feel physically, but mentally, too.

Mental health is hurting for many people, especially for nurses. We know this is a fact because we’ve seen the data. Compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses surveyed during the pandemic had higher instances of anxiety disorder (20% vs 16%) and depression disorder (16% vs 14%). 34% of nurses reported feeling sad, down, or depressed for at least 2 weeks during the pandemic. This is much higher than before the pandemic (29%).

At the same time, many nurses do not have an outlet for their feelings. “There’s a culture of strength in nursing,” says Katie Boston-Leary, PhD, MBA, MHA, RN, NEA-BC, CCTP, Director of Nursing Programs & Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation. “If you don’t feel psychologically safe, you can’t show emotion. As a result, there’s a weathering that happens over time that can break a nurse’s spirit.”

We are strong, but we are not invincible. We deserve to prioritize our mental health. We deserve this wellness for ourselves in the same way our loved ones and patients deserve it.

For this 10-day challenge, let’s prioritize your mental well-being and engage in new ways to reduce stress. And remember: It’s OK to show emotion. It’s OK to let down your guard. And it’s OK to prioritize yourself.
