Bayhealth Medical Center started on a journey to bring awareness of the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. This journey started with a Champion partnership with the American Nurses Association’s Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ Grand Challenge.  Those benefits consist of getting adequate rest, ways to de-stress, making healthy food choices, and choosing lifestyle changes that encourage activity and exercise.

Patient Care Services leadership took the opportunity to work with front line staff to develop ways to engage and meet the needs presented by our staff.  Topics such as Eat this, Not that; Nutrition Talks; and Head over Meals were focused on in the nutrition group.  The Quality of Life group took a deeper dive into nurse break times and emotional well-being. Each group found that there is something different and meaningful to each nurse and what is important to them.

The physical activity group took the stance to make an exercise class available every month on campus at no cost. This allowed all staff an opportunity to become active.  The first class was hugely successful with more participation than just nurses.  The classes were advertised with internal marketing and flyers and facilitators from outside gyms volunteered time to come in and teach classes.  The classes ranged from Body Blast, to yoga, to circuits, to Tai Chi, and ventured into the 5k arena.

The 5k was organized entirely by nursing leaders and staff out of Patient Care Services.  Each participant partnered with a business in the community to gain sponsorship as well as advertisement that Bayhealth wants its nurses and its community to be active and living a healthy lifestyle.  There were a total of 281 participants that included walkers, runners, and silent heroes.  The Chief Executive Officer  and President, Terry Murphy and Chief Nursing Executive and Senior Vice President, Brenda Blain  were in attendance showing their support for Bayhealth nurses and the initiative to bring awareness to the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. The success of this event was so profound that it will become an annual event for Bayhealth Medical Center.

As we continue through this year, all of our groups have teamed up to look at Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation collaboratively.  We will continue to meet the needs of our staff on an ongoing basis and with the use of Workplace as a platform to disseminate information.  We are very excited to be able to provide the staff with additional opportunities to learn about a healthy lifestyle and how to invest in themselves.
