Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Find Your Balance Challenge - Day 8 Tip - What are you prioritizing?

Published
Welcome to day 8 of the Find Your Balance challenge.

Decide what you need to do and what can wait. Not every matter is urgent. Delegate less pressing tasks to other team members or schedule some tasks for your next shift, if appropriate.

The same is true at home. Instead of using home time to be uber-efficient and plow through your to-do list, build in rest, relaxation, and fun. If feasible, consider housekeeping, concierge, handyman, and/or meal prep services to free up your time.

Are you prioritizing? Share with us in our discussion or on Facebook.

Missed day 7? Catch up here. Get a sneak peek at day 9.

Mrs Sheena D Pracyk, RN‍ This is such a great idea!!
When learning to become a Charge Nurse and Nurse Manager, I was fortunate to have a couple of great mentors.
One lesson that they they shared, that I have gone on to share with others, is to look at what I have on my to do list of life and assess to see if a) they are the right things, b) at the right time and c) for the right person.
1) Are there things on the list that shouldn't be there at all or shouldn't be there now?
If so - do they need to be cancelled or perhaps rescheduled to a more suitable time. Are they on the wrong list...should they be on someone else list?
2) Are there things that ONLY I can do?
If so, - how do they need to be prioritized and do I need to share those skills with others?
3) Are there things that others can do?
If so, who can I best delegate items to - and be sure not to overload or overwhelm another. Are there opportunities for others to level up and grow if I mentor and support them with those assignments? Are there others more qualified or suitable for those items than me?
4) Does this have to be done today or is tomorrow or next week OK?
Things sometimes take on an urgency that is more in our minds than reality. We work in situations dealing with urgent/emergent situations and ever-changing shifts in priorities...but should be aware of not needing to respond to everything with that mindset.  Using a Red, Yellow, Green color code to highlight urgency can work as a visual cue on a calendar.

The limitations to success may be with me...Sometimes it may seem faster or easier to do something myself.  It's important to acknowledge, that If I make that choice but harbor dissatisfaction or resentment, then I can't place that blame or frustration onto others without accepting my role in the process and my choices.
Also, it may be faster/easier but that may not be in the best interest in growing and developing my team/family. It may take more time and effort to help others learn to master those items together, but that shifts the level of skill and expertise to others who in turn can be of more support in future and they gain in the process in skills and confidence.

This process that I learnt so many years ago, works! I just shared it and encouraged some C-suite executives to try it during a coaching program. By re-assessing and re-working their calendars, they were able to free up time for self-care micro-breaks, grab lunch and cut the work they were taking home with them at night as just a few examples of proactive changes.
