Share Resources With Others

Even if every nurse prioritizes their own mental health, a larger cultural shift towards openly addressing mental health issues and decreasing mental health stigma will require structural shifts from policy and employers to increase free or low-cost, accessible, anonymous programs and resources.
Here are some tips for nurse leaders at all levels to improve mental health care among nurses:
- Proactively reach out to nurses on your team and share available mental health and well-being resources.
- Encourage ongoing assessments on mental health and resiliency. Everyday Health offers a Resilience Assessment that gives an immediate score and feedback on how to improve resiliency.
- Support new nurses as they enter the workforce so they can develop lifelong skills to cope with stress and distress.
- Find more recommendations in ANA’s Promoting Nurses’ Mental Health Position Statement and ANA’s comments to NIOSH.
