Find A Silver Lining

Published
Thank you for joining us on day 1 of the Protect Your Peace of Mind Mental Well-Being challenge!

Remember, it’s normal to rehash mistakes and situations that didn’t go as planned. Focusing on them too much, however, can lead to unhealthy thinking.

Doing the opposite — focusing on the positive — is linked to lower rates of depression and a better ability to cope with stress. That’s why on day 1 of this mental health challenge, we encourage you to find the silver lining.

Tonight try this exercise:
  1. List 5 things that make your life more enjoyable or enriching. Thinking about this helps you shift into a positive mindset. One example is being physically healthy.
  2. Now think about a recent time when you felt upset, frustrated, or depressed.
  3. Grab a pen and paper and write down a short description of the situation that made you feel that way.
  4. Then, list 3 ways that might help you to see the bright side of the situation. For example, if the elevator was out of order and made you late for work, at least you got some exercise taking the stairs.

Finding your silver linings isn’t a cure for existing depression or serious mental health problems. But learning to reframe your thoughts to be more positive can build resilience against future anxiety and burnout.

Talk to your health care provider if you feel you need additional help and check out the Well-Being Initiative’s Nurses’ Guide to Mental Health Support Services.
