Try Something New

Published

When we talk about mental health, we’re talking about the brain. And changing things up is good for your brain. Whenever you challenge yourself to learn a new skill, your brain cells form new connections.

Stepping out of your comfort zone in a safe way is good for you.

Now that we’re at the halfway point of this challenge, it’s time to switch things up. Your chosen change doesn’t have to be something grand like learning a new language or picking up the guitar — it can be simple. Consider these examples:
  • Talk to someone you’ve never talked to before.
  • Go out to eat at a new-to-you restaurant.
  • Try cooking or baking a new recipe.
  • Change your exercise routine.
  • Brush your teeth with your other hand.
  • Grow a new type of plant.
  • Camp, lawn bowl, golf, kayak, try a new physical activity outside!
  • Say no to added responsibilities or extra shifts without guilt.

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut that makes you feel like you’re on autopilot. By trying something new, you’ll feel at least slightly refreshed and rejuvenated. Do this every once in a while, when things start to feel stagnant.

Learn more about how getting out of your comfort zone benefits your health.
