Form Connections

Published

Social connection often gets overlooked, but it’s crucial for health and well-being. One study found that lack of social connection is more dangerous to our health than obesity, smoking, and high blood pressure. Loneliness is the main reason people seek psychological counseling.

When you feel connected to others, you’re less likely to have anxiety and depression. Social connection promotes higher self-esteem and greater empathy for others.

Today, we challenge you to either give some TLC to your existing connections or form new ones. To strengthen your existing connections, try to:
  • Spend more quality time together — put your phones away.
  • Ask deep, thoughtful questions.
  • Listen intently to the person’s answers. Don’t listen to respond, listen to hear.
  • Show your loved ones how much their support means to you with actions, not just words.

To form new connections, consider these ideas:
  • Enroll in a class that intrigues you.
  • Get involved in a committee at work, such as a wellness committee.
  • Join a book club, hiking club, running club, or some other group.
  • Volunteer.
  • Interact in our discussions to connect with other nurses like you.

You’re not alone! See how #healthynurse Christine Pabico prioritizes her well-being with connection.
