Choose Sustainably Raised Protein - Eat Clean, Go Green challenge, powered by Compass One Healthcare - Day 3 Tip

Published

On day 1 of this challenge, we talked about how grazing animals affect the environment, and we recommended reducing your meat consumption. Yesterday we talked about eating more plant-based protein in place of meat. When neither of those are possible, try to make sure the meat you eat is certified organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised, or humane.

This is important for environmental AND health reasons. Some grazing animals (like chickens) are often given an arsenic growth promoter to make them unnaturally bigger. Not only is this inhumane, but the arsenic in the chicken feed seeps into the soil and into our foods, increasing our risk of cancer.

Meat from grazing animals like chickens and cows pose another health risk: antibiotic resistance. Poultry and cattle feed can contain antibiotics. Eating meat from these animals makes our bodies more resistant to antibiotics. When that happens, antibiotics are less likely to help our bodies fight off superbugs.

So, what can you do TODAY to choose sustainably raised protein?
  • If you’re going to eat fast food, choose one with policies restricting antibiotic use by their suppliers
  • At the grocery store, buy meat with labels that include the words organic, grass-fed, free-range, cage-free, or certified humane

To learn more about these issues, including antibiotic resistance from eating meat, explore the Keeping Antibiotics Working website.
