Appreciate Those Who Comfort You

Published
We can become more compassionate by thinking about how others have brought us comfort. It’s true — science confirms it.

“Attachment security” is when we feel trust and comfort. With this safe and secure feeling, research says that we can better focus our energy on helping others. But how can we increase our feelings of security? What reminds us of the kinds of qualities we want to embody when supporting others?

The answer: By thinking about the people in our lives who love and support us. When we appreciate those who comfort us, we’re more inclined to show compassion to others.

For today’s challenge, grab a pen and paper and complete this short exercise:
  1. List the people in your life who make you feel safe or at ease. If it helps, think about:
    1. Who do you enjoy spending time with?
    2. Who is the toughest to be away from?
    3. When you’re concerned about something, who do you go to?
    4. Who do you seek out when you're feeling down?
    5. Who is the one person you can count on to support you no matter what?
    6. Who do you want to share your accomplishments with?
  2. List 6 uplifting traits that these people share.
  3. Think back to a time when one of these individuals calmed or helped you through a hard time.
  4. Write a few sentences to describe the circumstance and how you felt.

“The deepest craving of human nature is the need to be appreciated.”
