Try one of these ideas for decluttering your mind of unnecessary thoughts:
- Do a brain dump: Grab a pen and paper, then write down all your thoughts as they come to you. Imagine you are physically releasing your thoughts as you write them down.
- Write a letter: In a more organized way, write what’s on your mind in the form of a letter. Direct it to yourself, a loved one, or anyone you’d like — the point is to get your thoughts on paper and out of your head, even if no one reads it.
- Confide in a trusted, loved one: Talk to a friend, family member or coworker about what’s going on in your head. Use that person as a sounding board and let them know you just need them to listen.
- If you are a spiritual person, pray: Research shows that spirituality (prayer, meditation) helps regulate emotions. Many people use prayer to focus their thoughts, let go of issues that are cluttering their minds, and find peace.
