Grow Your Identity Outside Of Work

Think about your professional identity and your personal identity. Are they separate and unique? Or do they overlap so much, they’re practically the same?
There’s no denying that your career is important. You’ve spent years in nursing school training to get where you are today. You dedicate your days to helping other people get well. You make a difference in the lives of countless people.
But if your career and professional life carry so much weight that they seep into (and eventually overtake) your personal life, burnout is probably not far behind.
To prevent or reduce burnout, you must prioritize who you are outside of work. What do you like to do for yourself? What activities and hobbies (that have nothing to do with nursing) bring you fulfillment and joy?
“For many people, their professional identity has become their entire identity,” says current ANA President Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. “They get close to retirement, and they have no personal interests or personal identity. It’s important for your well-being to not just focus on work. Find something that balances you and fulfills you.”
Take a few moments today to do something you enjoy, like gardening, exercising, baking, painting, reading, or something else. Expand your circle of support and interests. Invite a new neighbor for coffee, reach out to a friend you’ve lost touch with, participate in a local faith or civic organization, join a book club, take an acting class — do whatever brings you joy AND perhaps meet some new friends!
