Reflect Before You Bite - Mindful Eating, powered by Morrison Healthcare, a Division of Compass One Healthcare - Day 1 Tip

Published
Mindful eating starts with understanding your body's cues and fostering a positive relationship with food. But how do you learn your body's cues?

You can figure it out by asking the right questions before you take a bite of food. By pausing to ponder things like, "Am I truly hungry, or is this boredom?" or "What flavors and textures am I craving?" you become more mindful when eating. This introspection helps you notice emotional triggers and differentiate between genuine hunger and other influences.

Your Action for Today
Before each meal or snack, take a moment to ask yourself a few questions about your hunger, preferences, and emotional state. This simple practice sets the tone for intentional eating and lays the foundation for a more balanced and enjoyable relationship with food.

  1. Am I physically hungry?
Is your body giving you signs of physical hunger, like a growling stomach? If not, it might be emotional hunger.
  2. How does my body feel?
Tune into physical sensations. Are you eating because you're stressed, tired, or bored? Intentional eating involves acknowledging and addressing these feelings.
  3. What nutrients does my body need right now?
Consider the nutritional value of the food you're about to eat. Is it providing the essential nutrients your body needs?
  4. Is this a balanced portion size?
Assess your portion size. Be mindful of how much is on your plate and whether it aligns with your body's needs.
  5. Am I eating in a distraction-free environment?
Minimize distractions. Avoid eating in front of the TV or computer. Create a calm environment to focus on your meal.
  6. Can I savor each bite?
Slow down and savor the flavors. Put your fork down between bites, and truly enjoy the taste and texture of each mouthful.
